Occasion: Connick on Piano, Vol. 2
This new recording by pianist/vocalist/actor Harry Connick recording on Branford Marsalis's label, is a delightful and diverse, thirteen track saxophone/piano duet. In this setting, these New Orleans homeboys display their dizzying interplay and invention with the kind of ease that can only come from years of friendship. Marsalis’s throaty tenor and silken soprano lines blend beautifully with Connick’s Errol Garner meets Thelonious Monk and Professor Longhair pianisms. On "Valentine’s Day" and "Virgoid" Connick’s left hand is steady, with a trace of the Latin tinge. It's beautifully contrasted by the the Broadway-type tunes, "I Like Love More" and "All Things." The pianist's performance on Marsalis’s "Steve Lacy" – an atmospheric elegy to the late sax giant – and the boppish title track -- proves that, to the contrary, familiarity breeds good jazz, not contempt. It also reminds us that there’s more to Connick than Independence Day, When Harry Met Sally, or Hope Floats. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Review:
Brilliant

A great CD for all you Jazz fans. The more I listen to it, the more I like it.
Harrt Connik Jr. Ocassions

I was disappointed. I love both Harry and w. Marsalis when they play good old straight ahead jazz, innovating old standards, for instance. But here we have little bits of abstractions, doodling, finger paintings, if you will. I kept impatiently waiting for them to get on with it. For God's sake guys! Play something!
Great music

I love Harry Connick Jr. I really discovered him about 5 years ago and love his music. I have all his albums and also saw him in person. Great piano player. Never disappointed by his music. great to listen as background while hitting the keys on the computer . Any time is great listening to Harry.

Wicked (2003 Original Broadway Cast)
One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

    FANTASTIC!!

I love this show, and its music. The singers are phenominal!! Especially the evil witch. You just get taken away in her high belt! What a singer.
    Amazing, Amazing, Amazing!!!

If you have no other Broadway Show cd's than make this your first. Words can not describe the wonderful lyrics and melodies contained in this recording. Now, proceed to checkout!!!
    Great Show

Though the musical can not even begin to have the sophistication of the SUPERB book by Gregory McGuire, it is great fun. Though the original cast is good, the current broadway cast (Shoshana Bean as Elphaba, Megan Hilty as Glinda, Ben Vereen as The Wizard...) is a cast I wish I could have a recording of. Shoshana Bean blows Idina Menzel out of the water...her voice is more stable in all registers and her acting is far superior. I'm okay with spending $15 on the CD with Idina but I'd never have paid $200 for a ticket for her...Shoshana I plan to see at least 2 more times in NYC.

Buffy the Vampire Slayer - Once More, with Feeling
While the idea of infusing a weekly TV series with a Broadway musical ethos isn't exactly a new one--think Randy Newman's ambitious Cop Rock--it became something of a turn-of the-century television mini-trend. But few have reached as far--or succeeded--like this November 2001 episode of Fox Network's Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Penned by series creator-producer Joss Whedon and performed by Sarah Michelle Gellar and cast, it's a loving, loopy musical pastiche that takes potshots at everything from Andrew Lloyd Webber to alt-rock. Paralleling the show's lovable pop culture tweaking, the musical styles here (the episode's musical conceit is a curse visited upon Buffy's hometown of Sunnydale) range from a patent footlight chorus of demons being interrupted by Gellar's hard-rocking stake thrusts on "Going Through the Motions" to Spike the Vampire's goth-metal complaint "Rest in Peace," with everything from parking tickets and mustard stain removal to climactic duels with the supernatural getting the Broadway send-up. Also includes strong orchestral score-suites from three other episodes, as well as Whedon and wife Kai Cole's demo for "Something to Sing About." --Jerry McCulley

    Once More...And Again and Again

A must have for any Buffy fan! The majority of BtVS fanatics love the Once More With Feeling episode so, of course, those fans will LOVE to be able to hear the songs from the show. But these songs are awesomely cute (good music too!) and I think would appeal to those who are not even familiar with the show.
Wonderful episode of a Classic and Perfect TV Series.

This CD is a must own for all Buffy Fans. The soundtrack to one of the coolest episodes from The Buffy series is an absolute joy to listen to. Amazon lists The "Main Title" track as track #1 on the CD which is where it should be as that's where it appears in the episode, but that track is actually #19 on the CD, which I thought was odd. If you import the album into iTunes, you can reassign the track numbers and put "The Main Title" in its correct place as track #1.
    AWESOME, AWESOME, AWESOME!

Loved this episode. It was....what's the word I used? Oh yeah...AWESOME!!!

Best episode in the series. One of the best in episodic television, period.

The songs moved you, meant something (the lyrics were substantive, emotion-filled, were in-synch with both the characters and what the characters were going through at the time...and rhymed to boot!) and were well paced, crafted and executed. The actors really put their all into it and did an EXCELLENT job. From giles and amber benson's great vocal performances to Sarah M.G.'s dancing at the end. It was just...great. Vocally- Amber Benson stole the show...too bad mr. whedon repaid her by killing off her character a few episodes later!!!!!!!(thank you joss...NOT!!!) Giles can REALLY sing as well..I mean..he puts it down. Everyone does a great job and j.w. really put in work with his lyric authorship.

BTVS pulled off quite a coup with this one!

Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith - Original Motion Picture Soundtrack
John Williams' lovely and moving score for the sixth Star Wars film brings thirty years of collaborating on George Lucas’ beyond-popular intergalactic franchise to a close. (Is this really the end of Star Wars? Can’t Lucas and Williams work together on a prequel to these prequels? Let us hope so, and that Jar Jar Binks is nowhere near it.) As this music accompanies the most exciting Star Wars film in many a moon, the soundtrack itself is more fun, more evil, more nasty and bumpy. Many of the heroic, anthemic themes woven throughout Episode Three: Revenge of the Sith will necessarily be familiar to any fan of the series, from the "Imperial March" to the main theme. It’s remarkable how stirring the latter can be, no matter how many times you’ve heard it, and even for those who do not have all their money invested in S.W. memorabilia. There is a lot of new music here, and the lush, extensive range of both Williams and the London Symphony Orchestra is on display, most notably in the menacing, percolating "General Grievous" and the rousing "New Hope" end theme. --Mike McGonigal

    Williams at his Best!

The soundtrack for the latest Star Wars Movies has most certainly met my expectations and more. It fits perfectly with the mood and sets the right tone for each scene. The songs "Battle of the Heros" and "ANakin vs. Obi-Wan" Are some of the most spectacular battle themes I have ever heard. WHile others such as "ANakin's Betrayal" "Padme's Destiny" and, my favorite, "The IMmolation Scene" WIll have you sobbing. WIth breathtaking, gorgeous music this is most certainly a MUST HAVE for any music collectors. 10 Stars!
Not great themes, but another show of Williams' mastery

I usually listen to classical music. So I was tempted to listen to some soundtracks from SW, perhaps triyng to link my devotion to entertainment movies and Wagnerian musical sagas. This is the first CD of SW I have, and very good.
To begin with, the DVD is the perfect introduction to the saga.
What about the music? Well, if you want fresh, new materials across the entire cd, you may be a little disapointed. But a great composer shows his mastery even when he is (a bit) uninspired.
Are there great themes such as the main title, the emperor's, Leia's, across the stars's, Anakin`s ... No. what we find here is a sort of not so stellar material. perhaps the most striking at first is "battle of heroes" but the thematic cell seems short, with not much development. That track is great, but because he introduces other motifs.
the themes about grevieus are the worst. Too "fight" music, too incidental, too boring (esp track "Gral grivius"). What about using past themes???
Come on, listen to Wagner's Ring: many themes are used and reused. the marvel is not always to create new themes but to transform and reuse the old ones in a new, creative way. If you, once in your life, listen to Bach's Mass in B or "Christmas oratorio" and you like them, you will know he, the greatest western composer, uses old themes many times. And in new, great ways.
Certainly Williams uses old themes, too, across the six films eg with the "Force(?)" theme (the one familiar that is heard right at the beggining after the fanfares of the opening, the one that mixes with the funeral music at the end, the one that appears in a masterly fashion in "battle of the heroes" sung by choir). The same theme, but always saying different things in different contexts. This is what makes a composer great, not only just "melodic creativity".
I see that the album may not reflect the film music, but is valuable as a cd per se. There is unity across the score. Basically, the atmosphere is double. Is about war. And is about sadness and darkness. The tracks are distributed strategically to reflect this double axis. That's why it does not follow the film order. As a whole, then, structural coherence prevails. What I find as a failure is that, even though the composer does not repeat itself never inside this album. several tracks are "incidental" music: the ones about grivius in particular. And I have to acquire a taste for "enter lord vader". But "anakin dark deeds" is monumental.
In short, a very competent work, with many great moments and several not as great. I like the way he introduces previously known themes. This is not a failure, just an opportunity to show how great a composer he is.
What about the funeral music? Isn't sad seeing the chosen one, the one who would bring balance to the force, seen for the first time in the cronological order of time with the famous dark clothes?
What abour the final pasticcio of A new Hope? Of course he needed to make a reference to the future, to Hope (after one the most gripping cds ever to have been composed in the whole history of music) with motifs about the twin sisters. And the fanfare and march of ANH at the end od the end credits? Remember this is the last moment of the last SW score. The most monumental film project about entertainment (Lord of the rings movies, long as they are, are just 3 films)has just finished. Lucas and Williams at last completed their task (although in the net there are script for new episodes VII, VIII & IX ... but I think this will be another's responsability). Don't you think this deserves some monumental music? Frankly after hearing the last chord it makes me remember similar moments in Wagner music.
    Huge fan of Star Wars

I love all the soundtracks of star wars even though I get sad every time I hear the Padme's fate I want to cry all the from that song

But the soundtrack is great and the movie is great I had a blast I never got bored seeing the movie I seen it 4 times

May the force be with you always
